Student Focus: Kayleigh Jarrett

On completing her HND Fitness, Health and Exercise at North East Scotland College in June, Kayleigh Jarrett has left Aberdeen to continue her studies at Midwestern University in Texas.  The aspiring athlete has been offered a full scholarship at the institution and will spend a lot of her spare time there training with the athletics team.  We spoke to Kayleigh just before she left to find out how this opportunity came about.  This is her story:

After leaving Lossiemouth High School in 2009, Kayleigh spent some time working in administration-related jobs.  She said, “I couldn’t see myself doing that long term so I decided to go back to education and, having been interested in art at school, I applied to study NC Photography at NESCol.”  On completing the year-long course, Kayleigh realised that although she enjoyed photography as a hobby, she would rather forge a career in an industry related to her other passion – sport.  She said, “I have always been keen on running so the HND in Fitness, Health and Exercise at NESCol’s Aberdeen City Campus looked really interesting.”

Kayleigh has really enjoyed her time studying at NESCol.  She said, “I’ve really enjoyed being back in education and taking responsibility for my own learning.  One of my highlights was when I got to do some work experience at a primary school near Stonehaven.  It was so much fun working with the children and I got a lot out of it even though I was exhausted by the end of the day!”

During her time at NESCol, one of Kayleigh’s friends suggested that she look into continuing her studies by applying for a scholarship at a university in the USA.  She said, “I hadn’t thought about it before and I really didn’t think anything would come of it when I emailed the coach but everything has fallen into place and I leave in a couple of weeks!  I’m really looking forward to it because I’ll be studying a subject I’m really interested in - exercise physiology - alongside training.”

Kayleigh credits her time at NESCol with helping her being accepted for the scholarship.  She said, “When I came back to college, I had no idea that this opportunity would come up but my time at NESCol has given me so much confidence and really prepared me to take this next step.  It just goes to show that you never know where studying at college could take you – I would definitely recommend it!”
