“The College’s links with Johnston Carmichael allowed me to see accounts in practice. When I got offered a job after college, I was delighted that changing my career path had worked out.”
Lana Laing (25) entered the world of work when she left Turriff Academy after her fifth year. She progressed quickly, reaching manager level at a sports centre by the time she was 21. Soon after, she realised that if she wanted to progress her career even further, she would need to gain some more qualifications.
During her job at a sports centre, she was involved in some accounts work that she enjoyed. This inspired her to apply to study HND Accounting on a full-time basis at North East Scotland College’s Fraserburgh Campus. She said, “The course was challenging but enjoyable and I was delighted to be awarded A grades for both of my graded units.”
During the two-year course, she successfully applied to participate in a summer placement scheme with Johnston Carmichael. Lana obviously made a good impression on the company during her placement. She said, “The placement led to me being offered a part-time admin job with them while I finished the course. Also, once I finished the course, I was delighted when they offered me a full-time job in their accounts department.”
Lana began working at their Fraserburgh office full-time in August 2018 and is thoroughly enjoying it. She said, “ I am so glad I decided to go back to college. Although it was a daunting thought after working full-time, the lecturers at NESCol and the friends I made during my time there made it an enjoyable experience. The College’s links with Johnston Carmichael allowed me to see accounts in practice. When I got offered a job after college, I was delighted that changing my career path had worked out. The firm offer progression routes and training so I can continue personal development in my new role. Going back to education was worth it in so many ways and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking about a career change to go for it!.”
