College update: Changes to national guidance / Coronavirus testing for students

The latest easing of Coronavirus restrictions in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will bring one key change to arrangements at NESCol.

This is in relation to the use of face coverings:

• From Monday (17 May) Face coverings can be removed in the majority of learning areas, where 2m distancing is in place. This is a change from current guidance.
• Please note face coverings will still be required in learning areas where risk assessed activities are being carried out at less than 2m distancing, for example practical hair and beauty sessions.
• Face coverings must continue to be worn in all public areas of the College, including corridors and on College buses and public transport.
• The only exception is when eating or drinking in designated areas or for individuals who have a medical exemption.

Existing measures will remain in place as part of the updated guidance. These include:

• Carefully managed access to campus to limit numbers. You should only visit NESCol facilities if you are timetabled to do so or have an appointment.
• Two-metre distancing throughout the College. The only exception is for specifically risk assessed activity and it is vital that students and staff continue to adhere to distancing requirements.
• Following the FACTS guidance at all time, including regular hand-washing and avoiding gathering in groups.

The College is also supporting the roll-out of testing for College students and staff throughout Scotland.

If you attend campus regularly you are eligible to sign-up to receive lateral flow test kits, which are now available for collection.

A lateral flow test involves taking a swab from the mouth and nose, with results visible on the test within 30 minutes. Results can then be uploaded onto the NHS website. The Scottish Government is recommending that two tests are taken each week, ideally three days apart.

The testing programme is for people with no symptoms. Anyone experiencing symptoms that may be connected to Coronavirus should not attend College and should instead immediately self-isolate and book a test by calling 0800 028 2816 or visiting https://www.nhsinform.scot/. Symptoms include a high temperature, a new and continuous cough or a loss or change to the sense of smell or taste.
