Shoppie success in Fraserburgh

Learning Opportunities groups based at NESCol’s Fraserburgh Campus, along with their lecturer Gary Graham and LSA Shirley Anderson, have been working hard this year to support their local and college communities by re-opening The Shoppie, a low-cost shop located at the Campus.

Since opening, the students have been developing practical abilities in essential life skills such as washing, drying and ironing clothes; handling and counting money; and developing their interpersonal skills when working with the general college community.

The Shoppie has also supported college-wide initiatives by:

• Successfully partnering with the Trussell Trust and becoming up a foodbank drop-off point. This helped shine a spotlight on the college pledge to help End Hunger within our communities. All donations are distributed to those who need it most.
• Partnering with local food organization Cfine to offer low-cost fruit & veg hampers to both staff and students. All proceeds are used to make up additional hampers for students at Fraserburgh Campus who may not be able to access fresh healthy food.
• Providing a low-cost and second-hand outlet to staff and students by selling goods in The Shoppie such as clothes, home bakes, jewellery and much more. This helps promote sustainable living.
• Taking part in a beach clean-up in Fraserburgh. Students collected and disposed of litter and pollution from the shoreline to shine a light on environmental issues and sustainable living.

The staff and students involved are an inspiration to everyone – well done!
