This Unit is offered to those working towards completion of the HNC Accounting course. It will introduce you to the nature of leadership, approaches to management and factors that affect both individual and team performance. You will gain a good understanding of the different approaches to managing an organisation in today’s dynamic and complex business environment, and will enable anyone intending to work in an administrative, commercial or management role to important theories – in turn, giving you the skills and knowledge needed to evaluate organisational effectiveness.
On successful completion you will be able to identify and apply a knowledge of organisational, management and leadership theory and practice to a range of given situations. For further information on this course, please visit the SQA website.
Credit points and level: 2 HN credits at SCQF level 7: (16 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 7)
The Unit should provide you with an understanding of the theories behind management, organisation and employee performance – specifically focusing on how you should apply these theories to organisational situations. To assist your overall understanding, earlier theories and models will be described. Concentration will be placed on more modern approaches however, and ideas that review the management styles and roles regarded as necessary for organisations of the 21st century. The unit will also explain the alternative methods by which work organisations can be structured.
Assessment may take place on an open-book basis with structured questions based on stimulus materials requiring candidates to produce a written or oral response.

This is a mandatory unit within HNC/HND Business Group Award or may be part of other HN group awards as optional or stand alone HN unit. Students may progress from an HNC to an HND or ACCA course, or move directly into employment.
The HND course offers progression to ACCA or again directly into employment as assistant accountants, supervisors or financial or cost accountants. The ACCA course, once completed, allows the student to apply for accounting positions either in the profession or in industry and gain the relevant work experience to achieve full membership.
This course requires some attendance at College, often for assessment purposes only. Please enquire about expectations for your specific course when booking.
Attendance is usually at the Aberdeen City Campus or Fraserburgh Campus.
When submitting your distance learning application form, please ensure you attach the additional information sheet listing qualifications and previous knowledge with your application. You may be required to attend College for assessment. Please check if this is a requirement for your course.
Distance Learning courses have flexible start dates and applications will be considered at all points of the year.
