Why take this course?

This course will introduce you to essential care values, human health and development. You will study a range of units and develop industry-related good practice – excellent preparation for your progression towards further study or employment. During this course you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the importance of care values in working with people in a healthcare setting;
  • Gain an insight into human development and its value in working with people;
  • Develop an awareness of health and safety issues relevant to a range of activities;
  • Develop core and essential skills including communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Develop industry related good practice;
  • Be prepared for further learning opportunities, study and training opportunities in Health and Social Care.

What you will experience

The National 5 course is made up of the following four units:

  1. Working in the Health Sector
  2. Life Sciences Industry and the Health Sector
  3. Improving Health and Wellbeing
  4. Physiology of the Cardiovascular System

You will be taught by means of practical based activities and classroom based theory lessons in one of the North East Scotland College campuses by a College lecturer, or within your school. Study takes the form of individual research, group activities, practical activities, watching videos and through reviewing course hand-outs or textbooks provided by the College.

You will develop key interpersonal skills, as well as confidence when it comes to communication, organisation and planning. Throughout the course you will be offered an opportunity to review and identify how your skills and knowledge are developing, and will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Regular attendance and good timekeeping;
  • A professional attitude and an interest in healthcare;
  • A willingness and commitment to learning;
  • Planning, preparation and research skills;
  • An ability to establish/maintain good working relationships with others;
  • Problem solving skills.

To achieve the full award you must attend regularly and successfully complete all units. Assessment will be based on tests and case studies, along with project work and a portfolio. The course will show on your final SQA certificate as a National 5 qualification.
