Why take this course?

This City and Guilds course will introduce you to the basic skills required for employment in the automotive maintenance sector.The course allows for extensive hands-on work, and will allow you to develop confidence and competence when it comes to problem solving, teamwork and commercial awareness – key transferrable skills for progressing towards further study or employment. You will:

  • Build a broad base of knowledge, skills and understanding related to vehicle technology;
  • Develop an awareness of health and safety issues relevant to a range of activities;
  • Develop essential skills for learning, life and work;
  • Develop aspects of the core skills of Working with Others and problem solving;
  • Build technical knowledge and skills in relation to working within the industry;
  • Develop good practice in maintaining a tidy and safe work environment.

What you will experience

You will be introduced to workshop safety, and the tools and equipment used in the industry. You will then progress to developing skills in the repair and maintenance of vehicles through learning about the principles of engine components and operation for steering, breaking and suspension systems. Teaching will take the form of theory, as well as a range of practical activities.

You will participate in the following units:

  • Engine Lubrication Systems
  • Vehicle Braking Systems
  • Steering and Suspension Systems
  • Wheels and Tyres
  • Engine Cooling Systems
  • Vehicle Electrical Systems.

The programme places an emphasis on learning by doing, so most of the work you will be doing to achieve the units is practical. You will be taught in Vehicle Maintenance Workshops and classrooms at either the Fraserburgh Campus or Aberdeen Altens Campus, and throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to review and identify how your skills are developing.

You will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Good time keeping skills;
  • A willingness and commitment to learning;
  • Knowledge of appropriate dress – Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in particular;
  • An ability to work independently;
  • Planning and preparation skills;
  • An ability to establish/maintain good working relationships with others;
  • Problem solving skills.

To achieve the full qualification you must attend regularly and successfully complete units. You will be assessed through a combination of practical assignments and oral knowledge tests. Upon successful completion of all relevant elements you will receive a City and Guild Certificate evidencing your learning.
