Why take this course?

The National Progression Award in Technical Theatre at SCQF Level 6 is designed to provide learners with a range of design skills applicable for use in technical theatre. Learners will use design skills as well as specialising in specific areas such as:

  • Lighting Design
  • Sound Design
  • Prop making
  • Set Design

Learners may also have the opportunity to integrate their skills through the undertaking of a project. The NPA has the potential to improve progression to further study, providing learners with relevant experiences which develop skills of commitment, collaboration, creative thinking and self-discipline.

What you will experience

The course consists of four SQA units which you must successfully complete in order to gain the award.

  • Technical Theatre in Context
  • Professional Theatre in Context
  • Theatrical Design
  • Theatrical Prop Making

You will experience a variety of teaching methods and practical activities. The course will be delivered at the College’s Aberdeen City Campus.

You will be expected to demonstrate/develop the following essential skills for the workplace:

  • Good time keeping skills
  • An ability to work independently
  • Planning and preparation skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • An ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others

Assessment will take place on an ongoing basis throughout the course, under open-book conditions. (Open-book conditions may continue unless the COVID modifications change. If they do change then some assessments will be conducted under closed book circumstances).
