Energy on the Move

Step aboard and find out about the future of energy!

Purple Energy on the Move lorry with expanded glass sides

The Energy on the Move vehicle is ready to journey across the North East of Scotland, igniting inspiration for the energy transition.

Housing the ‘Net Zero Challenge’, the vehicle expands into a classroom in the car park, providing a unique learning experience for the next generation. It aims to demystify the energy transition, raise awareness of low-carbon energy industries and promote pathways into energy careers.

Energy on the Move is available to visit schools in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, as well as events across Scotland.

Energy on the Move

The innovative vehicle is a repurposed 7.5-tonne lorry that transforms into a bespoke learning environment with extended platforms and a glass front. It uses a hydrogen dual-fuel engine which significantly reduces its emissions, and learners can see the hydrogen storage tanks displayed on board.

Energy on the Move has been kitted out with exciting exhibits that are designed to be fun, interactive and accessible.

The Learning Experience

Created in partnership with the Glasgow Science Centre, the Net Zero Challenge is a 45-minute hands-on learning experience led by a facilitator on the vehicle.

The challenge is tailored for learners aged 11–15 and works best in groups of 8–16. The session explores the complexity and urgency of the energy transition and encourages learners to think about the role they could play in shaping the future of energy.

The Net Zero Challenge

Learners assume responsibility as policymakers for a fictional island with similar geography to the North East of Scotland. Their challenge is to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net zero for the island.

Pupils work their way around four stations focused on competing considerations in the race to net zero: sustainability, community, security and affordability. The session culminates with the group making choices about their energy solutions for the island.

Will they achieve net zero – and what consequences will each decision have?

Curriculum for Excellence

The Net Zero Challenge is linked to Curriculum for Excellence learning outcomes in science (SCN 3-04b; SCN 4-04a) and careers (HWB 3-20a, HWB 4-20a).

Additional resources are available for teaching staff that are complementary to the onboard experience. These last around 45 minutes and can be used while pupils are waiting for their Energy on the Move session, or before or after the visit.

What we need from schools

Energy on the Move will travel to your location and requires:

  • Usually a car park or school playground – grass surfaces are not suitable.
  • This must be easily accessible from the road and fit the vehicle
  • Fully-expanded size: 8.7m long x 6.8m wide x 3.7m tall.
  • Non-expanded size: 8.7m long x 2.6m wide x 3.7m tall.
  • Please note: if disabled access is required, an additional 3-4 m needs to be added to the length to allow lift access.

  • The vehicle needs to be close enough to a building to access two domestic power sockets, either outdoor or indoor with an extension lead.
  • The vehicle has two power cables, both 25m in length.
  • The power source must be available for the entire duration of the visit including vehicle set up and pack away.
  • The area will need to be cordoned off for health and safety reasons.

  • A member of school staff must attend with each class.

  • Someone should be available to meet our facilitator on arrival and to liaise with them throughout the visit.
  • The facilitator will need access to toilet, changing and lunch/ refreshment facilities within the school.

  • Prior to your visit you will be required to complete a short online form to provide us with more information, a class schedule for the day, and to assign a parking area for the vehicle.
  • We will liaise with you regarding this once a session is confirmed.

  • The vehicle is equipped with a lift – an additional 3–4m needs to be added to the length to allow lift access.
  • The exhibits are at an accessible height with space for those who use wheelchairs or mobility aids to navigate around.
  • Please let our facilitator know if your group has accessibility requirements in advance of the visit.

About

Energy on the Move is part of a wider project, the Energy Transition Skills Hub.

ETZ Ltd is working with partners to deliver the Energy Transition Skills Hub, operated by North East Scotland College (NESCol) and with funding support from the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund, ETZ Ltd and Shell UK.

The new facility is located within the Skills Campus of the Energy Transition Zone, on a site adjacent to NESCol’s existing Aberdeen Altens Campus.
