Aberdeen’s Planetarium and ‘Oor Big Braw Cosmos’

North East Scotland College is delighted to announce that Royal Astronomer Professor John C Brown OBE has agreed to host an evening of Planetarium star gazing and fine dining aimed at keen enthusiasts and interested stargazers alike!
Professor Brown has strong links with the planetarium and when he heard it was re-opening, was delighted to help raise the profile of this unique facility.
In his presentation ‘Oor Big Braw Cosmos’ he explores the beauty of the universe and its workings via a cocktail of science and science history, poetry and superb photo and art images, many from Scottish amateurs.
Visitors will visit the Planetarium to see the night sky and then enjoy a trip around the Galaxy with Dr Aakash Welgamage-Don. From there they will go to Gate 63, the College’s renowned training restaurant, where, following a Cosmic Cocktail and a delicious two-course buffet, Professor Brown will entertain them with his lively and highly entertaining presentation.
Professor Brown was appointed by the Queen as the 10th Astronomer Royal for Scotland in 1995, a post created in 1834. This title is an honorary one which he mainly uses to promote astronomy in the public eye and in education, through lectures and planetarium shows throughout the UK.
He has been involved, as adviser and/or giving debut shows, in several of the new planetaria recently opened in the UK, including Glasgow Science Centre’s superb Zeiss Starmaster, Birmingham’s Thinktank, Newcastle’s Centre for Life, and for a while, the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
The evening will commence at 6pm. Guests are asked to arrive at 5:45pm and meet at the Gallowgate Entrance.
