“Everyone, regardless of age or background, deserves success. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; if you have a goal, believe in yourself and take that first step.”

Casey Spriggs (31) took his first college step in 2010 by enrolling in a 12-week personal development programme funded by the Princes Trust in his home town of Peterhead. Little did he know that more than a decade later, he would be back at college completing an HND and moving on to study at university, despite facing a number of setbacks and challenges on the way.

Being a keen footballer since primary school, Casey enjoyed being active so he applied to study NC Sport and Fitness in 2011 after finishing the development programme. On successfully completing the NC course, he progressed to HNC level. Unfortunately, a lack of confidence and feeling overwhelmed led to him not completing the course.

One of Casey’s dreams was to join the Army, but after his application was rejected in 2017, he returned to the HNC course at college, achieving an A grade in his Graded Unit. This accomplishment spurred him on to HND level, but life threw more challenges his way. Casey endured three bereavements in quick succession, causing him to leave college once again.

Years later, now married and a father, Casey’s determination resurged at the age of 30. Fearful of age and rusty knowledge, he pushed past doubt, vowing to make his family proud. He not only completed the HND in Fitness, Health and Exercise but excelled, receiving full marks in the Graded Unit assignment. This achievement led to him receiving an offer from Robert Gordon University to enter the third year of a degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Science.

Casey’s aspirations continue to evolve and he is hoping to become a physiotherapist, possibly in sport or aiding armed forces veterans.

Reflecting on his journey, Casey said, “Everyone, regardless of age or background, deserves success. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; if you have a goal, believe in yourself and take that first step.”
