“I think my story shows the diversity a career in Beauty Therapy can offer. Not only can it allow you to travel, work anywhere in the world, but also give you the choice to work in an established salon or set up your own business and become your own boss. The opportunities are endless. It’s such a fun, rewarding career and the job satisfaction from making your client feel better about themselves is priceless. “
Julie (25) is lucky to have known from an early age the career path that she wanted to follow. She wanted a job where she could help people feel better about themselves and beauty therapy ticked the box. Julie had heard positive reports about NESCol so after completing her fifth year at Meldrum Academy, Julie applied for the VRQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy at the College’s City Campus and hasn’t looked back since.
Julie loved the practical nature of the course and found the style of learning suited her better than school. The facilities at NESCol for teaching Beauty Therapy match those in industry which allowed Julie to learn the different skills and techniques in a salon environment. ‘In:tuition’ and ‘The Salon’ at both Aberdeen City and Fraserburgh campuses are modern, sophisticated, fully functioning salons where staff, students and the general public can enjoy discounted services. This allowed Julie to hone her skills and get a real flavour for working with clients when it was time to move into industry.
Having successfully progressed from the Level 2 course to VRQ Level 3 Diploma in Body & Spa Techniques and completing her training, Julie was given the opportunity to travel and went to work on a cruise ship in the Caribbean which she loved. Upon returning to the North East, Julie began working in a salon before finding herself back at NESCol, this time working at the College. A part-time lecturer in the Beauty Therapy team, Julie now finds she has the best of both worlds, performing treatments on clients in the salon and passing on her skills to the next generation of beauty therapists currently training at College.
