Maritime Studies – Trainee Deckhand

” I can see already that there are many more female seafarers around today and hopefully my experiences at the SMA gives encouragement to others!”

A career at sea has always appealed to Lauren.

She said, “My dad was in the Merchant Navy so I’ve  grown up being aware of the opportunities of a sea-based career, it has just taken me a while to get here! I’ve worked in hospitality and retail for several years but I knew it was time for a change. I wanted to revisit a career within the maritime sector and found the Trainee Deckhand course which I loved. It gave me the foundations to be able to work as a deckhand and I have recently attended some interviews for positions in the standby and supply sector so fingers crossed.”

Lauren successfully completed the 12-week Trainee Deckhand course which provides all the necessary safety certificates to go out to sea. She is keen to get her sea experience and then explore the opportunities available in standby and supply; renewables and the Merchant Navy. After 6 months she is eligible to apply for the Efficient Deckhand qualification.
