Trainee Deckhand (NPA Maritime Skills)
“Since joining SMA, I haven’t looked back! I’ve never doubted my decision to become a seafarer, as the opportunity for career growth has kept me motivated.”
Pasha Pugovka tried a few courses at NESCol before finding his calling as a seafarer at the Scottish Maritime Academy (SMA).
Pasha came straight to College from Harlaw Academy, initially choosing to study SCQF Level 5 Social Sciences & Criminology. He then completed two modules of Entry to the Uniformed Services before deciding to enrol on the Trainee Deckhand course at SMA in 2023.
He said, “Since joining SMA, I haven’t looked back! I’ve never doubted my decision to become a seafarer, as the opportunities for career growth keep me motivated.”
Studying at the Scottish Maritime Academy
The 12-week Trainee Deckhand course is designed for those new to the maritime sector. Pasha enjoyed his time at SMA and made the most of the career opportunities offered to him.
He said, “I had great lecturers who were very approachable. They presented the information well and shared their own seafaring stories. The feel around the campus was also positive, with a real mix of students from all backgrounds.
“A real motivator was the prospect of job interviews at the end of the course, which is how I secured my position with North Star.”
Working at sea
Pasha’s current role is as a Fast Rescue Craft (FRC) Coxswain with North Star. So far, he’s worked on Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRVs) in the North Sea, which are ships designed to respond to offshore emergencies.
North Star have supported Pasha’s learning and put him through further training.
He said, “My duties involve maintenance of the FRC, checking fire systems and running regular man overboard drills. I am also able to launch the FRCs as I have a licence, which a normal deckhand can’t do. I really enjoy it!”
“I’ve been lucky. The crew are brilliant, and I’ve had a good Skipper. The company continually invest in my training, which has been very encouraging and helped massively.”
Efficient Deckhand course
Pasha returned to SMA this year to complete the 5-day Efficient Deckhand (EDH) course. This allows experienced deckhands to build on their skills and progress to an Able Seaman or Officer of the Watch role.
He said, “It was fairly straightforward because I could relate my seagoing experience to the learning. My classmates were also experienced seafarers, so we all had loads in common!”
A maritime career
Pasha is keen to grow his knowledge and experience to progress his career in the maritime industry. His next step is to advance to the role of DC Coxswain.
He said: “I’d like to work on larger boats within the energy and renewables sector, and if the opportunity came up, go deep sea and explore the world.
“I’m also planning to return to SMA to complete the GMDSS General Operators Certificate (Radio) qualification and ultimately work towards the Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency.
“Eventually, I’d like to be one of North Star’s youngest captains!”
Advice for students
Reflecting on his career so far, Pasha highlighted that communication is key for working at sea.
He said: “Good communication skills are essential for a successful seafaring career, especially when dealing with emergency scenarios.”
Pasha also added: “I was seasick during the first few days of being at sea but nothing since! I’ve not felt homesick, but it’s always a great feeling on the last day of the trip knowing you’re going home to friends and loved ones.”
