Time to Shine 2024 winners announced

December 13, 2024

With the festive season in full swing, the spotlight is on two members of the NESCol community who have gone above and beyond.

Student Jack McCranor and staff member Kerry Reith have been selected as the worthy winners of this year’s Time to Shine Awards.

Part of the College’s Sparkle Winter Festival, the Time to Shine Awards recognise and celebrate the exceptional contributions, generosity and positive impact of our staff and students.

Nominations were sent in from across our campuses and as always, the panel of judges was blown away by the inspirational individuals studying and working at NESCol. This year saw 68 nominations for staff and 23 nominations for students.

We are delighted to share the stories of our two 2024 winners:

Jack McCranor – Student

SCQF Level 5 Construction Crafts (Fraserburgh Campus)

Jack was nominated by Curriculum Manager, Danny Watson, for ‘exemplifying resilience, kindness and community spirit.’ Despite facing personal challenges, Jack has proven to be an extremely considerate and generous individual, contributing to the community in ways that inspire those around him.

Attending his local Men’s Shed every week, Jack dedicates his time to learning new skills and participating in community projects. In the past, he has volunteered to maintain grounds at a sheltered housing complex, ensuring the residents could safely access their gardens and enjoy the outdoors.

Danny said: “What sets Jack apart is his quiet humility. He never seeks recognition for his efforts or contributions. Jack’s determination to overcome personal challenges and his commitment to helping others make him a true unsung hero.”

Speaking about how it felt to be nominated, Jack said: “I am very grateful to have received the award. It means a lot to me and my family as it reassures me that I am doing well at College.

“But I can’t do College without the staff at NESCol who are always looking out for me and supporting me. Thanks to everyone, including the construction team.”

Kerry Reith – Staff

SVQ Assessor/ Work Placement Coordinator (Aberdeen City Campus)

Kerry was nominated by both her colleagues and students and described as a ‘shining light in the childcare team’. She consistently goes above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of others around her.

Outside of the College, Kerry is heavily involved with charity work, volunteering with Friends of ANCHOR in a multitude of roles, including team leader at the Courage on the Catwalk and Brave events. She also recently took on the impressive 18-mile Kilt Walk!

At NESCol, she participates in College life to the fullest and always goes the extra mile for students and staff alike.

Her nomination said: “Kerry Reith embodies what it means to shine brightly for others. Her tireless efforts, whether through her professional contributions, volunteer work, or personal commitments, make her an exemplary candidate for this award.”

Kerry said: “I am really overwhelmed that people took the time out of their busy lives to nominate me…what a lovely email to get this morning, it really made my day. I love my role at the College and am thankful for the great team that I work with.”

A huge congratulations to both Jack and Kerry!
