Amanda Smith completed the Professional Development Award (PDA) in Childhood Practice.
She said “I was the Manager at Banana Moon Day Nursery Dyce when I decided to apply for the course. To advance my career I had the choice of a PDA or to go down the degree route and I knew from the outset that my learning style was better suited to the PDA option.
“Some of my friends have opted for the BA but that appears to be a lot more self-study. I prefer to be hands on with face to face learning, sharing experiences and holding informed discussions with others. The PDA is more flexible as well and allowed me to balance study with my work commitments, I gave up a day a week at the nursery to attend college.”
Amanda said that at times the course was tough going but with the support of her class mates and tutors she had a really positive experience and “got there in the end.” The course was completed over two years, which she self-funded in year one and managed to receive funding in the second.
“I found the academic writing and Harvard referencing difficult and I often had to challenge myself to go outside of my comfort zone, looking at situations from different angles and I know I am now a stronger manager because of this. It has been worth it!”
Amanda is now Director at Banana Moon overseeing 4 nurseries in the region.
