HNC Childhood Practice

“I was completely put at ease by my tutors and lecturers and made to feel like I could achieve anything.”

Returning to education felt like a big step for Kim, but she embraced the challenge and gained the skills and confidence to start a new career in childcare.

Kim Downie (39) discovered how much she enjoyed working with children after she started a part-time job in a creche three years ago.

She said, “I previously worked in roles that I could fit around my kids and husband, mainly evening jobs such as cleaning and retail.

“I picked up a creche support worker job on the off chance, and I really enjoyed sharing experiences with the children, as well as having interactions with the parents.

“This gave me the idea that I could maybe start a career in childcare, so I applied for College.”

Returning to education

Kim began her journey at NESCol on the SCQF Level 5 Childcare & Development course in 2023, later progressing to the NC and HNC in Childhood Practice.

She said, “I was nervous about my age and how long I had been out of education.

“It was daunting and it took me some time to get used to things, but I found new friends and settled in quite quickly.

“I was completely put at ease by my tutors and lecturers and made to feel like I could achieve anything.”

Support at NESCol

Kim leaned on the supportive College community to help her get through her courses.

She said, “I met some friends who stayed with me through my College journey and helped me through some tough times when I felt like quitting.

“Juggling studying with family life was not always easy but I had brilliant support from College staff to complete my qualifications.

“The HNC was particularly tough and there were a couple of times when I thought I wasn’t going to complete it. I took some time off, but my tutor and SVQ assessors reached out and helped me see that I was doing quite well and with a bit of time and support I could get it done.

“I have no regrets and I am so proud of myself for sticking it out and becoming a qualified Early Years Practitioner.”

College achievements

Kim’s commitment, hard work and positivity earned recognition in both the classroom and on placement.

She said, “During my NC year, I was nominated for a placement award by my tutors. This made me believe in myself and gave me the reassurance that I was doing okay.

“The placement experience was so beneficial and helped me grow my confidence even further.”

Despite facing challenges during her time at NESCol, Kim remained determined. In 2024, she was highly commended at the Go Celebrate! awards for her incredible attitude and commitment to completing her studies.

Next steps

After graduation, Kim is looking forward to getting started with her new career in childcare.

She said, “I’m looking at support worker roles at the moment to dip my toes in before applying for Early Years Practitioner jobs.

“I’ve also been considering childminding. I want to build up my experience and confidence and get a few roles under my belt.

“In the future, I’d like to work with small groups of children.”

Advice for students

Kim’s advice for adult returners is to not be afraid of making a change and going back into education.

She said, “Even though it might seem like you’re older, don’t be scared if you want to do something. I was so nervous but if you know it’s something you want to do, stick with it.

“Communication is key. Inform your tutors if you are struggling or have something coming up and they will work around you and help you get to the end of your course. Use the support resources that you can get through MyNESCol – you’ll be alright!

“I can now provide opportunities for myself and my family that I couldn’t before, and I’m excited to see where this qualification and experience takes me.

“Anyone considering it, go for it and see how you get on.”
