Why take this course?

This simulator based course will provide you with the skills to maintain safe navigation through the use of electronic navigation systems.

What you will experience

Content of this course includes:

Planning a voyage / navigation
Information from navigation equipment and systems – radar and ARPA
Navigation systems including ECDIS and associated systems to assist command decision making
Search and rescue operations

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements are:

At least 12 months watchkeeping service whilst holding a Certificate of Competency issued under Regulation II/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended. (Candidates for Chief Mate less that 3,000 gt will be accepted with a minimum of 6 months watchkeeping service); and provide documentary evidence of successful completion of:

a) MCA approved Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST) (Operational Level) course completed on or after 1 January 2005; or

b) MCA approved ECDIS course completed on or after 1 January 2005.

Students shall verbally confirm on the day that they are fit and well enough to participate in practical exercises.

Successful completion of this course forms part of the requirements for the Chief Mates Certificate of Competency (unlimited).
