Automation and robotics are where two disciplines come together as one – Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The term “Automation” encompasses many different areas in these fields. Quite simply, automation makes our lives easier. Manufacturing would be nothing without automation, remotely operated vehicles, factory robots, and industrial motion control is the way forward for Engineering. This is leading to new, innovative products and better consumer experience.
This College devised course will give you a taste of Automation and Robotics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) to integrate the robotics, Design and 3D printing and wind energy and renewables. During the course you will:
Teaching will take the form of practical, hands-on activities in a workshop environment, combined with classroom-based theory lessons. Classes will take place in a workshop at the College’s Fraserburgh or Aberdeen Altens Campus, or in a school setting.
This course is made up of the following four units:
You will be introduced to workshop safety, the tools and equipment used in the industry and will then progress to the development of basic essential skills required in the industry. The course will also equip you with the knowledge you need to make an informed decision on progression pathways, whilst giving you the opportunity to develop the important employability skills.
You will experience a variety of teaching methods & practical activities and will be taught in workshops and classrooms at College or in a local school, depending on your location. Throughout the course you will be offered an opportunity to review and identify how your skills are developing. You will be expected to demonstrate:
To achieve the full qualification, you must attend regularly and successfully complete all units. Assessment will be based on a range of practical activities in the workshop, and Assessors will watch you undertake various tasks. Please note that you will be expected to demonstrate an awareness of health and safety throughout.

You will be required to provide and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety boots, boiler suit and safety glasses.
For all construction and engineering courses it is necessary to wear PPE. You are not allowed into the workshops without PPE and will be returned to school and marked absent if you arrive without it.
There are 4 units that make up this course: 2 SQA units which will appear on an SQA certificate, and 2 College delivered units, which will be sent on a College Certificate.

This course is only available to pupils in S4 to S6 across Aberdeenshire, giving pupils the opportunity to experience life as a College student whilst staying on at school.
